Wilderness.. Trench 100.. backfilled

After being opened on last years Summer Dig, Trench 100 is backfilled.

One last look at that revetment in Trench 100

We had one last look before backfilling, and now we can see some larger stones at the bottom and it now looks simalar to the wall in the enclosure in Trench 16 and 18.

Trench 14 - we all stand round and watch Penny and Derrick expose more stonework next to the chamber.

Trip down to the River Alyn and braved the cold to pull out a rim shard.

 Trench 100 Wilderness.

After drawing, the top stones of the revetment were lifted to see if there was anything underneath, and it would seem (hard to see from this shot) that there are more stones as if it was a wall.

The trench is now being backfilled.

Caer Alyn Archaeology - What is under the Revetment?

A section was cut into the stone revetment in Trench 100 and it was shown to be a stone facing as always suspected.  It is most likely that the revetment runs for 200m.

We continued with the section under the 4 stones.  Found a lot of black (charcoal?) before finding a gravel layer. The stone that cause the false posthole stain looks to be quite large.

First Geophysics report from 2010 Summer school

During the summer school 4 grids were surveyed by our visiting students. The first two grids have now been processed and the report has been completed (see attached file below) The report has been compiled by one of our visiting students Lydia Jones and I must comment, that for a first attempt at a geophysics report it is excellent.

In Trench 100 at the foot of the bank turns up 2 post under the large slab that was lifted yesterday. I dont know if they show up on the pic ... Hard to see on the phone ... But they are about 10'' diameter and less than 1m apart. it is probable that they run the entire length of the bank for 200m.

 No digging today....  Those left at camp go off to Chester for the day, while I chicken out and go home to sleep in a warm, dry bed for a night.

Karen found this marked stone on Saturday.. we have had it analysed by comparing it to similar markings at the campsite and it clearly says "Joe was 'ere"
